May 12—JAMESTOWN — Four members of the Jamestown High School baseball team played their last game at Jack Brown Stadium as Blue Jays on Monday.
"I've gotten the chance to know these guys through multiple sports," JHS head coach Tim Ranum said. "They are competitors and really set a good example for our kids. They are all very coach-able which I really appreciate. I feel really fortunate to have a good group of seniors here my first year as head coach."
While Braxton Perkins and Derek Hatlewick will be moving out of Jamestown for college, Jaxon Kolpin and Thomas Newman will be continuing their academic and baseball careers at the University of Jamestown next year.
"I've been talking to Coach (Tom) Hager since the end of my junior year," Kolpin said. "I reached out to him and he's been reaching out to me. I've gotten to know him and he's liked what he's seen from me on the diamond and he gave me the offer a couple of months ago."
Kolpin's decision proved influential.
"(UJ) is close to home and (Kolpin) is going there so that's why I am going," Newman said. "UJ has a good (baseball) program going and I have a lot of friends there already so I thought it would be fun to go there keep playing sports.
"Coach Hager has been watching me since my sophomore year and he's been talking to me since then," Newman said. "He gave me my offer this winter."
Kolpin and Newman have been playing baseball together since seventh grade.
"We push each other every day," Kolpin said. "In batting practice we try to see who can hit the ball harder and on the mound we try to see who can throw harder — usually Thomas wins."
Kolpin and Newman both saw time on the bump on Monday.
The Blue Jays finished out their regular season schedule with a split against Bismarck Legacy. The Sabers won game No. 1 8-5 while the Jays took the second game 7-6. Jamestown's record is sitting at 13-7 in the West Region and 15-9 overall.
Jamestown's seed entering the West Region Tournament will be determined after all the regular season games are played. The 2025 WDA tournament is set to be played in Williston beginning May 22.
In game one, a couple of Legacy errors helped the Blue Jays get on the board early.
Newman wound up in scoring positions off errors by Legacy's second baseman Drew Beasley and shortstop Harrison Johnson. The senior was batted in by a base hit from Kale Verke.
In the third, the Sabers retaliated and managed to put three on the board in the third to take a 3-1 lead over the home team.
In the bottom of the third, Jamestown took its time at the plate, drawing three walks to load the bases for Kolpin. A walk of Kolpin cut the Sabers' lead to one.
Bennett Goehner gave the Jays the lead back with a hard single that drove in two Blue Jay runners.
"Shoutout to Bennett Goehner," Kolpin said. "He went 2-for-3 and he had a hard knock when we really needed it. ... "After we got four, I was really excited. I was really happy and wanted to get back on the bump and finish it for my teammates. Unfortunately I couldn't do that but we'll get them next time."
Legacy went on to score five in the sixth to clinch game No. 1.
"Honestly, we could finish anywhere from second to seventh depending on the day we have," Ranum said. "We'll see what other teams do tomorrow and we're just going to wait and see what happens."
