Blockbuster Trade Idea Would See Ex-Red Sox Superstar Traded For Second Consecutive Season originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Red Sox shocked the baseball world by trading Rafael Devers last season, but the San Francisco Giants are struggling and may be sellers at the trade deadline.
Devers was supposed to be a piece that helped the Giants compete with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West. The Giants missed the postseason last year and are 27-41 entering play on Wednesday. They have a high payroll and are not seeing results. Could they consider trading Devers to get rid of his contract?
MLB insider Bob Nightengale recently reported that the Giants "would love to unload" a large contract. Devers, Willy Adames, Matt Chapman and Jung Hoo Lee are making a lot of money, but the team is not winning. Lee, Adames and Devers have all been playing well lately, so this may be the time to get the most out of them in a trade. Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller proposed this blockbuster trade that would ship Devers to the Washington Nationals:
- Giants receive: RHP Luis Perales, LHP Alex Clemmey, OF Sam Petersen and current/future salary relief
- National receive: Rafael Devers
The Giants already have Devers' replacement on the team. They called up their top prospect, Bryce Eldridge, earlier this year, and he is hitting .300 with an .885 OPS. He would take over as the everyday first baseman with Devers gone.
"Well, if there's any team with room in the budget to absorb the more than $200M remaining on Devers' deal, it's probably the Washington Nationals, who barely have a $55M payroll right now if you disregard the final $35M year of Stephen Strasburg's disastrous contract," wrote Miller on Wednesday.
The Nationals have scored more runs than any team in baseball, without a competent designated hitter. They could use Devers and improve their already elite offense. They have a terrible pitching staff, so they need as much offense as they can get.
Devers has an .826 OPS since the start of May, and could really do damage at a more hitter-friendly ballpark. Nationals Park is not known as a hitter's paradise, but it is a better venue than Oracle Park.
Going into last season, Devers was seen as the Red Sox's franchise player, and it was hard to imagine him playing elsewhere. However, now it would not even be a surprise to see him dealt again.
