Blockbuster Athletics trade proposal sees A's land $110 million two-time All-Star ace to create 1-2-3 punch with Jeffrey Springs, Aaron Civale originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Athletics have found themselves in a spot they haven’t been in a while: leading the AL West. With a record of 10-8, they are atop the division, although they have teams hot on their heels.
If they want to keep their spot, upgrading their pitching should be a priority, as only Jeffrey Springs and Aaron Civale are really performing. Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter proposes that the A’s can find a truce ace to lead their team by making a deal with the Toronto Blue Jays for All-Star Kevin Gausman.

The trade would look like this:
Athletics get: RHP Kevin Gausman, cash
Blue Jays get: ATH No. 4 prospect LHP Wei-En Lin, ATH No. 28 prospect OF Darwing Ozuna
“The Athletics failed to upgrade a weak starting rotation during the offseason, settling on Aaron Civale as the only notable addition to the staff, and now they currently rank 20th in the majors with a 4.27 starters' ERA…Financial limitations are always a factor for the Athletics, but the Blue Jays might be willing to eat a significant chunk of the money still owed to Kevin Gausman in the final season of his contract if it means a better prospect return,” Reuter wrote.

So far this season, Gausman has posted a 0-1 record, a 2.42 ERA, 31 Ks, and a WHIP of 0.851 over 22 innings pitched. He could easily take over the role of ace from Luis Severino, and give the A’s a nasty 1-2-3 punch with Springs and Civale.
He would be a rental, but this season might be a fluke for the A’s. If they have a chance for a playoff run, they should do everything in their power to do so.
