In case you have been living under a rock the last few months, the big story for the Atlanta Falcons this year is their quarterback competition between Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa.

According to quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt, the battle won't officially begin until Penix is 100 percent healthy and cleared for 11-on-11 drills, which he expects to be by training camp. Nevertheless, Tagovailoa should be considered in the lead for now as he's gotten all of those reps so far this offseason.

While both have their unique gifts, it's entirely possible that neither one of them will prove they are worth naming Atlanta's long-term starter. If that's the case, Bleacher Report has an interesting suggestion for another potential QB1. The Falcons have been named as one of five teams around the NFL who should consider targeting San Francisco 49ers quarterback Mac Jones before the trade deadline.

"If Atlanta is again around the .500 mark before the trade deadline, it should make an offer for Jones. In terms of durability, Jones would be a far more reliable quarterback than Penix and Tagovailoa. Also, by Week 1, he'll be the same age as Tagovailoa and just two years older than Penix, who's in his third season. The Falcons wouldn't give up on much upside if they pursue the 49ers' sixth-year veteran signal-caller."

Any discussion of Jones as a trade target should include the fact that the 49ers claim they have no interest in trading him. Nevertheless, that might change, especially if they get offered a second-round pick for the former 15th overall pick by the New England Patriots in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Jones had a respectable rookie season, totaling 3,801 passing yards, a 67.6% completion rate, 22 touchdowns, 13 interceptions and a passer rating of 92.5. He was unable to match that production the following two years in New England, so in March of 2024 they traded him to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Jones played just one season in Jacksonville, going 2-5 in seven starts and throwing as many interceptions (eight) as touchdown passes.

However, Jones got another chance last season as the 49ers' backup when Brock Purdy got injured. In eight starts, he went 5-3, posting a career-best 69.6% completion rate, 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns, six interceptions and a 97.4 passer rating.

Since then Jones has become a popular candidate to land a franchise QB job elsewhere after his contract with the 49ers runs out.

Jones has a good mix of youth and experience and he excels at the short, quick-hitting strikes that feature so prominently in Kevin Stefanski's offense. If neither Penix nor Tagovailoa has impressed by mid season, the Falcons should at least consider calling the Niners and asking what it would take.
