Anyone have any experience in collecting donations from multiple people and funneling it to where it can best be used?

It seems we have many posters that would like to get together as a group (ASFN) and make a donation to help the people of the Sand Diego/SoCal area.

Anyone in the SoCal area know of a specific charity we could make this donation to? I can check with my in-laws if we get no response. My mother-in-law's co-worker already lost her house in Ventura County...
