Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane came out firing this week following the 2025 NFL draft when critics came after the team's decision not to address the wide receiver position.
Beane made it clear on a local radio show Monday morning that the team was already the top scoring offense in the league last season. ... and that therefore, there's no reason to frantically add more to a group that is already elite ... especially not when the defensive side of the ball needed to be addressed.
“Our job is not fantasy football to trot out the best receivers,” said Beane on Monday. “You’ve got Josh Allen. The first you have to do is protect him. You can’t have everything. You can’t have Pro Bowl wide receivers and a Pro Bowl offensive line and All-Pro quarterback and three great running backs. I’d love to play fantasy football but there’s one football ... There’s one ball. You can’t give it to so many people.
"So that’s where I don’t understand the narrative.”
Beane's comments - even as they were laced with the "B-word'' - were fair. Buffalo has the reigning league MVP and a collection of talented weapons on the outside to more than make up for them having a true or traditional No. 1 receiver at this moment.
But then the team sort of walked those comments back with one move.
With the arrival of former second-round receiver Elijah Moore late Monday evening for a free agent visit, the Bills are clearly shopping for veteran receiver help.
No, he's not a No. 1, but ...
Beane can't simply state that the team was set at the receiver position, but then hours later host one in for a workout. Even if Moore doesn't eventually sign with the Bills, the jig is up. Buffalo may not have been comfortable drafting a receiver over defense, but the need is still there for the organization.
And Beane's fiery comments look more like a walk-back every day it happens.
