Bills: CJ Gardner-Johnson's Teammates Giving Telling Response to Injury
The Buffalo Bills had a scary moment at practice on Saturday when safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson suffered what appeared to be a non-contact injury during practice.
Per Alex Brasky of Sports Illustrated, Gardner-Johnson "clutched" near his Achilles.
The Bills weren't quick to give an update after practice on Saturday.
Per an update by ESPN's Adam Schefter on Saturday evening, Gardner-Johnson sustained a lower calf strain, which is much better news than what some online feared it could have been early in training camp.
"Tests revealed that Bills safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, who was carted to the locker room during Saturday’s practice, suffered a lower calf strain, per source," Schefter posted on X.
Gardner-Johnson signed a one-year, $6 million contract with the Bills in free agency.
Per Tim Graham of The Athletic, the veteran safety's teammates had a telling response to the injury after practice. Left tackle Dion Dawkins believed Gardner-Johnson is "OK" following the scare. He was able to put weight on his leg.
“He got up, and he did his thing,” Dawkins said. “He can put weight on his leg, so he can walk. We all know that injury is 100 percent in this league, but he’s all right.
“I got the message from coaches that he’s all right, and they’re going to do their protocol. He’ll get his (treatment) like he has to get. He’ll be right back in the loop, but C.J. is OK.”
Safety Damar Hamlin knows how important Gardner-Johnson is for the defense.
"You just say a quick prayer for him, obviously,” Hamlin said. “That’s one of our guys. He brings the energy. He’s an electric player. We all know who C.J. is, but as a person, he’s such a good dude. He’ll give you the shirt off his back if he could.
“You never want to see that happen to somebody like that. But prayers to him. We hope he’s OK. I’ve got a good feeling that, God willing, he will be OK.”
Gardner-Johnson, 28, co-led the NFL in interceptions for the 2022 season with six interceptions and won Super Bowl LIX with the Philadelphia Eagles.
