The Buffalo Bills didn’t just add a safety this offseason. They added a megaphone to their defense.
C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Buffalo’s free agent acquisition, was voted by his peers as the NFL’s biggest trash talker and most annoying player in back-to-back anonymous polls conducted by The Athletic.
Buffalo signed Gardner-Johnson to a one-year, $3.5 million contract worth up to $6 million with incentives.
He's joining a team quarterbacked by Josh Allen, who was voted the league's biggest trash-talking quarterback in an ESPN player survey in 2024.
The Bills needed help at safety after the departures of Taylor Rapp, Jordan Poyer, Damar Hamlin and Cam Lewis. Now they add both production and personality.
Counting a practice squad stint with the Baltimore Ravens, the Bills will be his seventh team in eight seasons. He's played for the New Orleans Saints (2019-2021), Philadelphia Eagles (2022, 2024), Detroit Lions (2023), Houston Texans (2025) and Chicago Bears (2025).
Gardner-Johnson's reputation as one of the NFL's top agitators isn't just based on perception. He's baited opponents for years.
He doesn't just get under opponents' skin — he gets them to swing at his. Multiple players have been ejected for throwing punches at Gardner-Johnson.

His 20 interceptions in 87 games are the sixth most in the NFL since he entered the league in 2019. The 5-foot-11, 208-pounder tied for the league lead with six interceptions in 2022. Gardner-Johnson, 28, and has been part of winning teams throughout his career, appearing in the postseason in all but one of his seven seasons. He played in three straight NFC championship games from 2022-2024 and won a Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2024 season.
During both of his stints with Philadelphia, Gardner-Johnson tied for the team lead with six interceptions, showcasing his ability to make plays on the ball from multiple spots in the secondary. He has experience playing free safety, in the slot, in the box and blitzing off the edge.
Gardner-Johnson has been known as one of the NFL’s premier agitators, a player who can get under opponents’ skin as easily as he can track the football. He has been involved in multiple on-field incidents over the years, including drawing punches from opposing receivers and racking up fines for unsportsmanlike conduct.
In anonymous player polling, he was voted the league’s biggest trash talker in 2023, then followed it up by being named the most annoying player in 2024. And it wasn't even close. Gardner-Johnson received at least 20% of the votes each time.“Yap, yap, yap,” one player said in describing him.
Gardner-Johnson has said in multiple interviews that he prefers to be labeled as a leader and winner who brings the same intensity to practice as games.
The Bills' already had a talker on offense. Now they have one on both sides of the ball.
Allen, was voted the NFL's biggest trash-talking quarterback in ESPN's 2024 anonymous player poll, finishing ahead of Baker Mayfield and Aaron Rodgers.
"He's going to run you over and talk trash after he runs you over," one player said.
The recognition was in contrast to at the end of the season when Allen was voted by his peers as the winner of the NFL's Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award.

- Saints practice incident: Teammate Michael Thomas was benched for a game after a fight in practice in which he reportedly repeatedly punched Gardner-Johnson.
- 2020 vs. Chicago Bears: Chicago wide receiver Javon Wims was ejected after punching the Saints' Gardner-Johnson in the helmet. Gardner-Johnson had pulled Bears receiver Anthony Miller's mouthpiece out on the previous possession. Wims was suspended two games by the NFL.
- 2020 vs. Chicago Bears: Chicago wide receiver Anthony Miller was ejected for punching Gardner-Johnson in the Wild Card game despite Bears coaches showing film of Gardner-Johnson's antics and warning players about engaging with him after Wims was ejected earlier in the season. Gardner-Johnson received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the play. He and Miller were both fined.
- Tom Brady history: Gardner-Johnson intercepted Brady twice in 2021. He also celebrated in Brady's face after Brady lost a fumble. then joked on social media about asking Microsoft to replace a tablet Brady smashed in frustration in the Buccaneers' 9-0 loss to Gardner-Johnson's Saints.
- 2024 vs. Washington: Gardner-Johnson was ejected after multiple unsportsmanlike conduct penalties even though he was shoved in the face by Commanders' wide receiver Dyami Brown, knocking off Gardner-Johnson's helmet. Gardner-Johnson flipped off Washington fans as he left.
- Ray-Ray McCloud altercation: Gardner-Johnson tugged on wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud's mouthpiece and McCloud responded by punching Gardner-Johnson in the facemask. Both players were penalized and later fined.
- Baker Mayfield feud: The two exchanged words on and off the field in 2024 and 2025.
- Travis Kelce jabs: Gardner-Johnson posed in front of Kelce after a hit in Super Bowl LIX. He made multiple posts related to Kelce and Taylor Swift, including wearing an obscene hoodie directed at Swift fans during the Eagles' Super Bowl parade after they defeated Kelce's Chiefs. Swift fans responded by leaving bad reviews at a Florida restaurant owned by Gardner-Johnson's mother. Gardner-Johnson later said there was "no beef" between himself and Kelce.
- Big-time fines: Gardner-Johnson was fined more than $100,000 by the league in 2024, including $45,000 for a late hit on running back Alvin Kamara and two taunting penalties.
