Bill Simmons coins new nickname for Trail Blazers owner Tom Dundon as relocation rumours continue

Portland Trail Blazers owner Tom Dundon is being criticized from all angles. To nobody’s surprise, Bill Simmons is among his funniest detractors, coming up with a hilarious new nickname.

Ever since Tom Dundon acquired the Portland Trail Blazers, they have been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Initially, it was for all the reported cost-cutting measures, but now it’s more serious.

With issues arising over the Moda Center arena in Portland, there are rumors that Dundon could be looking to move the Blazers away. As of now though, they remain largely unsubstantiated.

This hasn’t stopped the media from speculating away, however. And recently, while pitching a theory as to why Dundon might want to move the team, Bill Simmons coined a creative nickname for the owner.

Bill Simmons hilariously calls Trail Blazers owner Tom Dundon ‘El Cheapo’​

Dundon agreed to buy the Blazers in 2025 for a reported value of $4.25 billion. Considering how much some other franchises have recently sold for, that’s a fairly low number.

Since then, Dundon has been the subject of trolling from various fans and media members. As usual though, no one comes close to the hilarious creativity of Simmons.


“One of the things I was fascinated by was, Why did they let this guy buy the team? Why let ‘El Cheapo’ (Tom Dundon) get in there?” Simmons speculated on his show.

“Apparently they only had two offers (for the Portland Trail Blazers sale)… I just don’t think they had a lot of people that wanted to buy in.”

The nickname is a hilarious play on words referencing legendary Mexican cartel boss El Chapo. Whether these jibes help or hurt the Blazers’ chances of staying in Portland, fans will be hoping for the former.
