Bill Self is comfortably one of college basketball's greatest coaches. The current Jayhawks head coach has led Kansas for over 800 games and has over 1,000 games under his belt (1,126 to be exact).

He has won 79.6% of his games for Kansas with a 648-166 record as of March 21, 2026. He has also coached Illinois (102 games: 78-24), Tulsa (101 games: 74-27), and Oral Roberts (109 games: 55-54) during his coaching career.

Self led the Kansas Jayhawks to the 2026 NCAA Tournament for the team's 22nd straight appearance. The two-time NCAA champion is currently under contract with the Jayhawks on a lifetime deal, showing the echelon he sits at in the college basketball world.

Bill Self contract​


In April 2021, the Jayhawks signed Self to a lifetime contract to make him the highest-paid coach in college basketball. According to KU Alumni, his contract is laid out as a five-year rolling agreement that automatically adds one year after each season for the rest of his career. The coach is set to make around $53 million in the first five years of his deal, per CBS Sports.

His base salary begins at $500,000, along with a $100,000 signing bonus, but his contract is loaded with incentives and other financial conditions. Starting at the 2023-24 season, when his contract began, here are the payments for his coach responsibilities (public relations, merchandising, appearances, etc.) according to Yahoo Sports:

  • 2023-24 season: $4.2 million
  • 2024-25 season: $4.4 million
  • 2025-26 season: $4.55 million
  • 2026-27 season: $4.85 million
  • 2027-28 season: $5 million
  • Each season beyond 2027-28: $5 million

Self's contract is also equipped with incentives regarding the Jayhawks performance and results, such as:

  • Big 12 regular season championship (including ties): $50,000
  • Big 12 tournament champion: $25,000

What is a lifetime contract?​


In college sports, lifetime contracts are often structured as rolling agreements. They begin having a standard number of years (in Self's case, five years). After that initial period, the school adds one year after each season for the remainder of the coach's career.

As of March 2026, there are four NCAA coaches who have lifetime contracts:

Bill Self buyout​


According to The Kansas City Star, if Self were to leave the Jayhawks' program for another team that is a part of the Power Five or made the Final Four in the last five years before April 1, 2026, he would be bought out for $5 million. On April 1, his buy-out will drop to $4 million, and in April 2027, it will go to $3 million.

If Self were to take an NBA coaching job before this April, he would owe Kansas $3 million. If the coach were to be fired without cause, the Jayhawks would owe him $23.1 million.
