The Bill Belichick era at North Carolina began with quite a bit of fanfare, but the wind was quickly taken out of the sails.
The six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach started his tenure with the Tar Heels by losing in blowout fashion at home to TCU, and things didn't get much better from there. Though it showed some signs of life down the stretch, UNC still limped to a 4-8 finish in Belichick's first campaign.
There's naturally quite a bit of skepticism heading into Year 2, but speaking at ACC media days, Bill Belichick said his team is poised to take a big leap this fall. He said the Tar Heels are "way ahead" of where they were in 2025, describing the difference as "night and day."
"Overall as a football team, our culture, our program, our ability to operate as a team is much higher than it was a year ago," Belichick said, per ESPN, "and our talent level is higher."
The defense was a bit of a bright spot last year, but it struggled on fourth downs. Meanwhile, the offense was a mess, ranking near the bottom of the FBS.
"We took some steps, but we're nowhere close to where we wanted to be," Belichick said. "We had too many penalties, we had too many turnovers. We couldn't convert on third down, fourth down defensively. We had too many fourth-down conversions where we had to stay on the field."
He also added that there's more talent on the roster this year, using the fact that no North Carolina players were drafted this spring as evidence that last year's group was lacking.
North Carolina expected to contend for the ACC and College Football Playoff when it gave Belichick a $10 million annual contract. After a disappointing Year 1, we'll see if the NFL coaching legend can turn things around in his second season.
