The North Carolina Tar Heels are entering year two of the Bill Belichick era here in 2026, and the hope is that they can show major improvements. After a very difficult first year, Belichick and the Tar Heels are out to prove that they are on the right track.
But before the season starts in a few months, Belichick is making some media rounds, which is a rarity. He's also opening up about his past, including last season and the struggles that the team faced.
While appearing on Barstool Sports' "Pardon My Take" podcast, Belichick opened up about the struggles he had with last season's roster. He didn't hold back and was honest about it all.
That's refreshing and interesting to hear from Belichick. Here in 2026, the pressure is certainly on for Belichick and the Tar Heels to deliver. The outside noise is already loud enough and another year of struggles will not benefit them.
However, it's an uphill battle for the Tar Heels as they have the toughest schedule in college football for the 2026 campaign. Let's see if Belichick and the Tar Heels can turn things around.

“And the group last year, I mean, I wouldn’t say they were like disrespectful, that’s not the right word, but it was just different," Belichick said via On3. "It was like they were recruited by somebody else; they came here for somebody else.
"I was new, they were leaving, you know … It wasn’t a bad relationship, but it wasn’t a great one … There wasn’t the same kind of adhesion that there is to guys that you bring in, that come there because of you, because they want to be with you. And then you grow together.”
