Big takeaways from the Steelers preseason debut

The Pittsburgh Steelers kicked off the preseason on Thursday night with a huge 28-9 win over the Green Bay Packers. After a slow start, the Steelers really got things going and finished strong. Here are our big takeaways from the win.

Germie Bernard is going to be a star​

The rookie led all receivers with four catches for 51 yards and looked so comfortable in the offense. His ability to find openings in defenses, slip through tackles and accelerate was on full display and he's got a bright future.

Offensive line is a work in progress​

It was not a great night for the team's starting offensive line, especially starting left tackle Troy Fautanu. His switch to the left side hit a speed bump and the entire right side of the line struggled.

Sloppy football won't make Mike McCarthy happy​

Things settled down in the second half but head coach Mike McCarthy isn't going to like the mass of penalties the Steelers accumulated in the first half.

Kaleb Johnson buried on the depth chart​

Jaylen Warren and Rico Dowdle didn't play and Kaleb Johnson was still the fourth running back on the field. Rookie Eli Heidenreich got nine carries to Johnson's two and he seems to be the odd man out at this point.

Quarterbacks made some plays​

All the talk is going to be about the big throws rookie Drew Allar made but Will Howard was sharp as well. You can pick which guy was better but the position battle really heated up on Thursday night.
