Jan. 31—FOREST LAKE, Minn. — E.J. Paddington played on one of the best lines in the North American Hockey League last season.

The standout forward lost both of his linemates — Alex Laurenza and Luc Malkhassian — from a year ago, but he hasn't skipped a beat.

Paddington recorded his first hat trick of the season — goals 25, 26 and 27 of the year — here Friday to help the Austin Bruins roll to a 7-2 NAHL Central Division victory against the Minnesota Mallards.

Paddington also had one assist, giving him a four-point game and giving him 105 points in his Bruins career. The 6-foot-4, 207-pound forward and native of Thunder Bay, Ontario, had 21 goals and 53 points a year ago. He has 27 goals and 52 points already this season, with 22 regular-season games remaining.

Paddington scored once in the first period, when Austin scored five goals to build a fast 5-0 lead.

After a scoreless second, he scored twice on power plays in the third period to help the Bruins ice a 7-2 win.

Hudson Routh, Matsvei Marshchanok, Gavin Hruza and Zander Lipsett all scored once each in the win, and Cody Butikis made 25 saves. Marshchanok added two assists for a three-point game.

Austin (27-8-3, 57 points) has a four-point lead over the Bismarck Bobcats atop the Central Division.

The Bruins play at the Mallards again at 7 p.m. Saturday.

BOX SCORE: Austin Bruins 7, Minnesota Mallards 2
