As the fallout from the ruling granting Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby an injunction to play college football this fall continues, other Big 12 schools are unhappy.
Lubbock County court Judge Ken Curry ruled in Sorsby's favor, preventing the NCAA from suspending him after he admitted to significant sports betting activity, including bets on his own team, over four years. The Big 12 has been considering how to respond, and during a call between the league's athletics directors on Tuesday, things reportedly got heated.
According to ESPN's Pete Thamel, every Big 12 AD (except Texas Tech's Kirby Hocutt) felt strongly that Sorsby should not be allowed to play this season. It seems the member institutions would support the league issuing a suspension of its own.
It's unclear whether the Big 12 could punish Sorsby, as the court's ruling specifically bars the NCAA from enforcing its sports betting rules.
Hocutt responded to his counterparts with a statement posted on social media Wednesday in which he defended Sorsby and assured that Texas Tech would continue to monitor his recovery from gambling addiction. However, he seemed to imply that the Red Raiders fully intend to play Sorsby once he completes his court-ordered suspension for the first two games of the season.
The ruling, which the NCAA intends to appeal, has certainly been controversial. Texas Tech has been criticized not just by its own conference but also stakeholders across the sport. Still, barring action from the Big 12 or an overturn of the ruling upon appeal, it seems Sorsby will be cleared to take the field for the Red Raiders in Week 3.
