The old adage about smoke and fire sure feels like it applies to the Cincinnati Bengals just before NFL free agency opens.
The Bengals have openly talked about last year’s roster not being good enough. About the breakdown between the scouting department and coaching staff that didn’t get new defensive coordinator Al Golden what he needed.
Reports have backed up the idea the Bengals will be very active in NFL free agency, too.
And a Sunday morning note from ESPN’S Jeremy Fowler pops an exclamation mark on the whole thing:
“The team that could prove most aggressive on the defensive free agent market is Cincinnati, which is exploring just about every position group. Edge rusher Rashan Gary is a name to watch here should the Packers move on. New Bengals defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery was with Gary in Green Bay. Cincinnati has been linked to safety Nick Cross and several defensive linemen, too.”
The desire to rebuild the defense is real. Cincinnati desperately needs pass-rushing help with Trey Hendrickson and Joseph Ossai free agents. Shemar Stewart and Myles Murphy are unproven.
The Bengals also need help on the interior of the defensive line, veteran help at linebacker and a starting safety to put in a tandem with Jordan Battle.
The early connections suggested by the report here make sense. But the list of Bengals’ realistic free-agent targets is worth a look too before things apparently really get set to pop off when legal tampering begins on Monday and the market opens on Wednesday.
