On Monday night, Belgium was celebrating its most dominant match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after dismantling the United States by a final score of 4-1 and mocking President Donald Trump in the process. The cathartic win came after a day of drama surrounding Trump’s apparent involvement in securing eligibility for U.S. striker Folarin Balogun.
While Belgium was riding high at the time, its World Cup run did not last much longer as the team suffered a heartbreaking loss to Spain on Friday in the quarterfinal, ending its run through the tournament.
Belgium Mocked Trump, Dominated the United States
In a highly unusual and unprecedented move that sparked widespread outrage, FIFA announced that Balogun, who was expected to miss the match against Belgium with an automatic suspension for his red card in the previous match, would be eligible. The move was met with even more criticism once Trump confirmed that he called FIFA President Gianni Infantino to request a review of the foul and Balogun’s punishment.
Belgium was outspoken in its opposition to this decision, even warning the United States that if Balogun was in the lineup on Monday, that would leave “all further actions open.” Balogun was indeed in the lineup, but the team responded by thoroughly dominating the United States, winning the match by a final score of 4-1.
In the closing moments of the match, the team could be seen mocking Trump on the field by performing the iconic dance move he often does at the podium during his rallies, and they were seen performing the dance again in the locker room.

The team’s official social media account went on to taunt Trump and the United States with a post saying “Overturn this,” and Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois opened up about how the team was “disrespected” by Trump and the United States.
Belgium Loses to Spain
While Belgium had a dominant showing against the United States, the team was not able to replicate that dominance against Spain, suffering a heartbreaking 2-1 loss in the World Cup quarterfinals.
Spain struck first in the match, scoring to make it 1-0 30 minutes into the match, but Belgium equalized just 11 minutes later. Then, disaster struck for Belgium in the second half.
With the score tied 1-1, Belgium’s superstar goalkeeper suffered an injury while making a sliding play on a ball. As a result of the injury, Courtois had to be subbed out of the match in the 70th minute, with Belgium turning to backup keeper Senne Lammens.
Unfortunately, things did not go well for Lammens. Late in the match, he made a save on an unthreatening shot from Spain, but he failed to catch the ball or corral it afterward. Instead, the loose ball bounced right back to Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino, who scored what turned out to be the match-deciding goal.

Courtois could only watch from the sideline as Lammens’ costly blunder allowed the goal and ended the team’s run through the World Cup. It also marked what is likely the end of Courtois’ World Cup career, as he is now 34 years old.
