In the wake of the New York Knicks' first NBA championship in 53 years, Becky Hammon has been facing some heat.

A few years ago, the Las Vegas Aces coach and occasional ESPN analyst claimed that the Knicks lacked the true No. 1-caliber superstar necessary to win a title because NBA Finals MVP Jalen Brunson was too small to lead the team to true greatness. History said that Hammon's assessment was correct, with similar players like Isiah Thomas and Stephen Curry proving to be the exception. Nonetheless, folks have waited for new comments from Hammon after Brunson took the Knicks to a title.

Initially, Hammon noted that all Brunson did was prove he was another exception to the rule:

Becky Hammon on Jalen Brunson leading the Knicks to a championship: “Jalen, all he did was prove history wrong, he proves he's an outlier, so you can put his name next to Steph Curry and Isaiah Thomas, and I thought he played brilliantly, especially down the stretch.

However, only a few hours later, Hammon would open a pregame press conference for an Aces match-up with the New York Liberty by admitting that she was "wrong," clearly referring to her previous Brunson analysis:

"I was wrong. … My opinion was wrong.”

Look, kudos to Hammon for taking the high road and making this admission. It takes a big person to do that.

But come on now. What are we doing?

It's really weird that anyone felt this follow-up had to be forced out of Hammon. She shared an opinion, rooted in well-informed historical data, and her ensuing conclusion that Brunson was ultimately an exception was ... also correct! She shouldn't be castigated or turned into a takes piñata for simply doubting a sports team. It's not about the Knicks. It wasn't anything personal. It wasn't supposed to be this rallying cry that opened the door to, in effect, bullying her.

Hammon spoke up anyway because she has class, but I detest the mere fact that she felt she had to.
