LAKE FOREST, Ill. (WGN) — The Chicago Bears will be without their biggest offseason acquisition, safety Coby Bryant, for much longer than originally expected.
During his Tuesday media availability, Bears head coach Ben Johnson said he met with Bryant and the former Super Bowl champion will undergo knee surgery on Friday, with his recovery period to be 4-6 months.
"He's going to be encouraged to get back to help us there at the end of the year," Johnson said. "Just closing the loop on that one."
Bryant was carted off the practice fields of Halas Hall on Monday, Aug. 3. According to multiple reports, he came down awkwardly after a 1-on-1 rep and when Bryant tried to get up, his left knee appeared to be hobbled as he tried to walk it off. He went back down to one knee, took off his helmet, and was visibly emotional as he was carted off the field.
ESPN's Adam Schefter originally reported Bryant would miss 8-10 weeks with a hyperextended knee, bone bruise and small fracture, but will now miss extensive time for the Bears.
Seven defensive backs — Coby Bryant, Dallis Flowers, Kyler Gordon, Elijah Hicks, Jaylon Jones, Cam Lewis and Gervarrius Owens — have either reported to training camp injured or left practice with injuries since last Monday.
Bryant joined the Bears on a three-year, $40-million deal this offseason after winning Super Bowl LX with the Seattle Seahawks. Lauded for his leadership, work ethic and the energy he brought to the Bears' defensive unit heading into training camp, Bryant recorded seven interceptions over the last two years with the Seahawks and expressed excitement to work with Bears defensive backs coach Al Harris heading into 2026.
The Bears take on the Cleveland Browns at Soldier Field on Saturday, with kickoff slated for noon CST.
