The relationship between a quarterback and center is one of the most important connections in football, and for the Chicago Bears, there is even more emphasis on that relationship going into the 2026 season.
Last year, the Bears had veteran Drew Dalman who played a big role in the offense's success, but he opted for retirement this offseason, which led the team to trading for veteran Garrett Bradbury to take his place. Bradbury's spot in the starting lineup was up for conversation when the team drafted Logan Jones in the second round of this year's draft, but it appears in training camp that the veteran has the upper hand.
This week, quarterback Caleb Williams spoke about his relationship with Bradbury, crediting the veteran center for growth between them even though they faced some early adversity.
"The first couple days we were rolling … and then we had a couple off days where communication may have been a little off, or cadence or things like that," Williams said. "These past couple days we’ve gotten better with it and being more conscious of some of those small mistakes that show up and that happen. And so we have gotten better. And then, yeah, that’s my guy."
Given the offense that head coach Ben Johnson runs, there is no relationship more important than the one Williams will have with his center, which appears to be the veteran in the lead through the early stages of training camp. Time will tell if Bradbury keeps the job for the entire season, as he is currently playing on a one-year deal and has a rookie champing at the bit behind him.
