Bayern Munich sporting director admits trying to sign former Manchester United star Antony

Bayern Munich had a bit of a crazy transfer window last summer. Most of the business was completed early, but there was some drama on deadline day as multiple news sources reported that the Bavarians had sought the services of former Manchester United winger Antony.

Nothing ended up materializing, and most people forgot about the saga. Antony moved to Real Betis, where he has enjoyed a productive season, scoring nine goals and registering eight assists so far. But, was there actually anything to it?

Well, Christoph Freund admits there was. Speaking to Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany (via @iMiaSanMia), the FC Bayern sporting director revealed that Antony was among those considered by the club in the dying hours of the window.

“That period wasn’t entirely calm,” Freund admitted. “A lot happened. We looked into several players, Antony was among them. There was a conversation, but that’s now in the past. We’re very happy with how the squad is currently set up. In the end, we came out of it well and we’re satisfied.”

In the end, Bayern went with Nicholas Jackson on loan from Chelsea FC, a very different kind of player, which suited their needs. Antony would have been an interesting signing, but both parties came out satisfied in the end.
