Die Folgen: Bayern’s 3-0 win over Stuttgart in the Pokal (Bavarian Football Works)

It was not always easy for Bayern Munich, but the Bavarians were able to use a strong second half to pull away from VfB Stuttgart and win their first DFB-Pokal since the 2019/20 season.

Harry Kane stole the show with a hat-trick, but VfB Stuttgart kept it very interesting with a physical, spirited effort. Let’s get into it, here are some quick hitters on the match:

  • As always, let’s begin with a look at the starting XI:

  • There was very little doubt that Vincent Kompany was going to ride the lineup that got the team to this point. There were no surprises at all. Jonas Urbig was the only non-regular included and that was only because of Manuel Neuer’s calf injury.
  • There was a great amount of excitement and intensity from the opening whistle. VfB Stuttgart was far more active and inspired than in the previous meetings this season. It was a very high and aggressive press from VfB Stuttgart. As expected, they were not going to park the bus. You have to love that about Sebastian Hoeneß — his team do get after it.
  • Bayern Munich was not overly sharp early on. It took a bit for the Bavarians to find their bearings.
  • In the 17th minute, Maximilian Mittelstädt almost took out all of his frustrations about not making Germany’s World Cup team with a goal, but Urbig made a terrific save. Mittelstädt ended up as VfB Stuttgart’s best player on the day.
  • In the 22nd minute, Olise whipped in a nice diagonal cross, but Kane could not get a good piece of it.
  • VfB Stuttgart was definitely the more motivated squad and the aggressor. It is not often that we have seen Bayern Munich look uncomfortable, but Hoeneß had his boys raring to go — and they were very physical.
  • In the 27th minute, Chris Führich made a great run and had a good look, but unleashed a feeble attempt, which was easily saved by Urbig.
  • VfB Stuttgart was just the better team in the first half. Not by a large margin or anything, but it was far more focused than Bayern Munich.
  • Josip Stanišić ripped off a terrific shot in the 37th minute, but Alexander Nübel was up to the task and made a terrific save. The rip hit 156km/h which is 96mph (if the conversion is correct) and that is wild.
  • Let’s be honest, Nübel helped himself out this season when he needed to step up the most. It should be a relatively easy sale of him this summer for Bayern Munich. Such ridiculous goalkeeper depth in the club.
  • One of the reasons that VfB Stuttgart was able to continue to improve defensively this season was the play of Jeff Chabot. He was also a big reason that Bayern Munich entered the locker room at halftime with the score 0-0.
  • Not to beat a dead horse, but Jamal Musiala did not look comfortable against the physical VfB Stuttgart players. He was a little tentative, but the chemistry with his fellow attackers just seemed off again for him.
  • VfB Stuttgart did not lose any steam in the second half initially as it was just as fiery and intense as the first half. However, Bayern Munich would start to wear down Stuttgart.
  • Finally, in the 55th minute, Bayern Munich was able to break through. Olise sent in a great cross from the right side and Kane hammered a header in for a 1-0 lead. For all of the aggression and tight defending VfB Stuttgart had shown, it somehow left Kane all alone. One split-second of relaxing is all it takes for Bayern Munich to score.
  • In the 61st minute, Luis Díaz ripped a shot at Nübel through the heavy smoke of the pyro (lit by both fan bases), but the goalkeeper saved it. Konrad Laimer had a chance to score on the rebound, but badly missed.
  • The smoke just engulfed the whole playing surface. It was wild. Commentator Phil Bonney admitted that he could not even see who had the ball.

  • In the 80th minute, Kane rifled one off the crossbar, but the ball would eventually find its a way back to the Englishman, who executed a perfect turn and scored with a precision goal. What a sequence from Kane and that effectively clinched the game for the Bavarians.
  • A 90th minute handball call on Angelo Stiller resulted in Kane getting his hat-trick and Bayern Munich starting its celebration. To his credit, Nübel guessed correctly and almost got to Kane’s PK attempt.
  • Overall, Bayern Munich won the DFB-Pokal…and that is pretty damn cool. The win capped off an absolutely awesome season, which will end as one of the best in the club’s history. Sure, it was a long season and there were some downs mixed within the many ups, but it was a thrill ride from start to finish. Thanks for being here with BFW for all of it!

Barca to take run at Kane? (ESPN)

Here we are again — another rumor linking FC Barcelona to Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane:

Barcelona have been identifying strikers who can replace Robert Lewandowski and have settled on Atletico Madrid’s Julián Álvarez, Chelsea’s João Pedro and Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane, reports Mundo Deportivo. Barça will lower their standards if it becomes impossible to sign any of that trio. Barca face competition from Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal for Alvarez, while they have also made enquiries about Pedro but Chelsea are not willing to let him leave.

Some fans are still mildly concerned about Kane leaving the club this summer, but there is no reason to think about that just yet. Of course, any club with half a brain would want the Englishman, so it is no surprise to see his name in the rumor mill once again. It just seems doubtful right now that Kane will leave.

Bayern not in on Brown (Sport Bild’s Christian Falk)

What can (Nathaniel) Brown do for you? Apparently, not much for Bayern Munich:

❌ It is NOT TRUE: Bayern’s Munich’s interest in Nathaniel Brown is hot at the minute. It’s true that Nathaniel Brown is of interest to Bayern but things have not concretely developed to a meaningful point. FC Bayern are looking at him in a similar way to how they’re looking at Gvardiol. However, there is no offer there. Frankfurt are themselves wondering why Bayern are not more concrete. One reason is that sporting director Markus Krösche, who’s a very clever man, is selling a lot of players to the Premier League for a lot of money. Omar Marmoush, for instance, went for big money to Man City. The point is that Bayern Munich would go for this kind of player. He’s German, and he’ll be at the World Cup with Julian Nagelsmann’s team. However, the price tag will be €65m-70m [£56.2m-60.5m], and this is too much for a left-back at the moment.

Brown’s proving ground could be at the World Cup if he can get on the field, which might be tough with RB Leipzig star David Raum ahead of him on the depth chart.

Inter sets price on Dumfries (ESPN)

If Denzel Dumfries wants to leave Inter Milan, the club has reportedly set a price for him:

Internazionale right wing-back Denzel Dumfries will be available for €25 million this summer, Gazzetta dello Sport reports. The Netherlands international’s release clause becomes active at the end of the season, potentially opening the door to a transfer to long-time admirers Barcelona, but is only for the month of July. Dumfries, 30, is under contract until June 2028 after joining the club five years ago from Eredivisie outfit PSV.

Falk confirms Bayern out on Read (Sport Bild’s Christian Falk)

According to Sport Bild journalist Christian Falk, Bayern Munich has formally exited the race for Feyenoord right-back Givairo Read:

✅ It is TRUE: Bayern Munich have pulled back their interest in Givairo Read ahead of the summer transfer window. This is because they’re trying to sort out a new contract with Konrad Laimer. Both parties are in contact again. Laimer demanded a lot of money before, and that was too much for Bayern Munich, which is exactly why they initially stopped negotiations. But now, both sides are in talks again. If the Austrian signs a new contract, you then don’t need Read. He’d be an option if you sold Laimer or unwanted backups like Sacha Boey. At the moment, Bayern have Laimer and Josip Stanišić, and that’s enough. Manchester City are also looking at Read, and it’s hard to go against the Sky Blues in negotiations. So Bayern Munich are concentrating more on other players and other positions.

Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg had an initial report last week, but this seems to confirm that Bayern Munich has moved on from Read.

NUFC has multiple players who want out (ESPN)

Newcastle United could see a mass exodus this summer:

Newcastle United are standing firm over their demands for a fee of £75 million for the transfer of winger Anthony Gordon, amid strong interest from Bayern Munich, The Times reports. The England international is close to agreeing terms on a five-year deal with Bayern, who remain optimistic that a deal can still be struck despite the fact the two clubs are around £20 million apart in their respective valuations. In addition to Gordon, The Times states that midfielders Joe Willock and Jacob Ramsey could also leave St. James’ Park this summer.
