Bayern Munich rebounded from their Champions League disappointment with a commanding 4-0 victory at Heidenheim on Saturday to remain firmly on course to reclaiming the Bundesliga title.

Harry Kane in the 13th, Konrad Laimer in the 19th, Kingsley Coman in the 36th and Joshua Kimmich in the 56th scored in Bayern's statement win which came three days after they were eliminated by Inter Milan in Europe.

Bayern moved nine points clear of defending champions Bayer Leverkusen who play at St Pauli on Sunday. There are four matchdays left after the weekend round. Bayern's goal difference is also vastly superior.

Goalfest in Berlin

Union Berlin and VfB Stuttgart meanwhile needed just 45 minutes plus stoppage time to score four goals apiece as the 4-4 scoreline, which was then also the final result, set a Bundesliga record for most goals in a first half.

Union led 2-0 from Andrej Ilic in the 5th and Diogo Leite in the 19th before Deniz Undav in the 23rd and Enzo Millot in the 29th levelled for Stuttgart.

Leopold Querfeld restored Union's lead with a 35m wondergoal into the top corner in the 39th, Stuttgart led 4-3 from Jeff Chabot in the 43rd and Chris Führich in stoppage time before Ilic struck again before the half-time whistle with which Union avoided relegation for good.

Bayern deliver in style

Bayern's dream of going all the way into the Champions League final in their home stadium ended on Wednesday in Milan and they then had to go to Heidenheim where they had blown a two-goal lead in a 3-2 defeat last season.

But there was no upset this time around as top scorer Kane netted for the 24th time when he drilled into the bottom corner from outside the penalty area.

Laimer struck six minutes later off Serge Gnabry and the game was over as a contest when Coman struck from a tight right angle after goalkeeper Kevin Müller had saved a first shot from Raphael Gurerreira.

Kimmich's curling shot wrapped up a convincing victory over third-last Heidenheim.

Statement win in title race

"We must not underestimate this win although it may have looked easy from the outside. It was impressive how we approached the match. You could see that we wanted to score goals and win," Kimmich told Sky TV.

"It was a very important step (towards the title). We need two more victories and don't want to make it dramatic any more. Leverkusen must now deliver tomorrow."

Heidenheim coach Frank Schmidt said: "It hurts but what happened today was somewhat normal. But we must not be dragged down by it in the next games games."

Fight for Europe continues

Behind Bayern and Leverkusen the fight for the remaining Champions League slots and other places in Europe continued.

RB Leipzig in fourth were held 1-1 by bottom side Holstein Kiel, with Kiel leading in the 44th from Shuto Machino but Benjamin Sesko levelling from a 74th minute penalty.

Freiburg moved within one point of Leipzig from a 3-2 win over Hoffenheim, with Lucas Höler on target twice.

Mainz in sixth trail by another point after having to swallow a late 2-2 equalizer against Wolfsburg who ended a run of four straight defeats with the help of Maximilian Arnold's brace.

Werder Bremen are in the mix as well, two points behind Mainz, after beating 10-man Bochum 1-0 from Mitchell Weiser's late winner.

Third-placed Eintracht Frankfurt are in Augsburg on Sunday, when Borussia Dortmund also aim to keep their European dream alive against fellow continental hopefuls Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Heavy collison

The match in Leipzig was overshadowed by a heavy collision between RB keeper Peter Gulacsi and Kiel defender David Zec. Officials said that both players briefly lost consciousness, and Gulacsi was taken to hospital for examinations after being carried off on a stretcher.

"Pete Gulacsi is in hospital, he is responsive. The most important thing by far is that he gets better soon, quite apart from the result," RB Leipzig managing director Marcel Schäfer said.
