Bayern Munich board member for sport Max Eberl has dismissed a suggestion from former club Oliver Kahn that Jamal Musiala should skip the World Cup in a difficult comeback from injury.
"You can't tell an athlete to give the World Cup a miss and do something else. Jamal is doing his own thing. We all saw the injury, which was very complicated and had lasting effects," Eberl told Sky TV on Friday.
He said that at some stage “that moment will come when something extraordinary happens on the pitch and everything else fades into the background.
"A player as brilliant as Jamal Musiala, fit and in top form – he’ll be a real asset to us at the World Cup. And even if he’s not quite at 100%, we’d still be happy to have him on the bench to create precisely those special moments,” Eberl said.
Musiala fractured his fibula and suffered severe ankle damage at the Club World Cup in July. He returned in January but was recently sidelined again with a pain reaction in the affected ankle.
Former Bayern goalkeeper and CEO Kahn had said the previous day on Sky that Musiala should not play at the June 11-July 19 World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada because he is yet to reach 100% again.
"He should sit out the World Cup. If I feel that something isn’t quite right with my game, then I need to work on myself to get back to full fitness,” former German international Kahn said.
Sky pundit Dietmar Hamann, a former Bayern, Liverpool and Germany midfielder, shared Kahn's scepticism.
“The World Cup isn’t on Jamal Musiala’s mind right now. He needs to focus on getting back into shape," Hamann said.
"Once he’s back to his best, everything will fall into place. But time is running out. He’s got just seven weeks left. Everything has to go perfectly from now on."
