CANTON − A park's basketball court will be renamed in honor of former NBA star Phil Hubbard.
It will happen Aug. 8 during a "mini park reunion" at the Preston Young Sr. Mini Park in the 400 block of Henry Mack Way (Cornelia Avenue) NE.
Hubbard, a product of McKinley High School and the University of Michigan, was named Ohio Player of the Year in 1975. As a freshman at Michigan, the 6-8 forward helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA Championship game, and won a gold medal in the 1976 Olympic Summer Games.
While at Michigan, Hubbard was named an NCAA All-American. The university retired his jersey in 2004.
In 1979, Hubbard was a first round pick of Detroit Pistons. He played for the Pistons from 1979 to 1982, followed by the Cleveland Cavaliers from 1982 to 1989.
Hubbard was an assistant coach with the Washington Wizards from 2003 to 2009, and served as head coach of the Los Angeles D-Fenders from 2014 to 2015.
Hubbard is a member of Canton Outside of Canton, an organization of former Canton athletes who sponsor the annual Warren "Speedy" Pyles food giveaway.
The free reunion is 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will followed by an after-party at 8 p.m. at Celebrationz Lounge at 2820 Eighth St. NE.
