There’s a theme behind every Astoria and Seaside rivalry game. The theme to take away from Tuesday’s third and final matchup is: Trends have finally been reversed.
With both the Astoria boys team and the Seaside girls team being the little brother or sister to their rivals over the last decade, 2026 marked a drastic change of fortunes. The victories by both teams broke a long streak for each one. For the Seaside girls, it was the first time they’ve beaten Astoria three times in a single season since 2011-12. And for the Astoria boys basketball team, it was the first time they’ve beaten Seaside three times in one season since 2006-07. Elsewhere, the Knappa Loggers were looking to win league playoff matchups.
Astoria boys find rhythm late
Tuesday was an important game for the Astoria boys basketball team.
Not only were the Fishermen trying to sweep their rivals for the first time in 19 seasons, the Astoria team is also chasing a spot in the playoffs — and every game is important.
Like the Fishermen have done in most of their wins, they started off hot. Behind those sizzling hoops, the Fishermen led 19-8 after one. With how much the Seagulls have struggled to score this season, the explosive first quarter for Astoria looked to be enough, but the Seagulls battled back. A shooting drought from the Fishermen in the second quarter helped their rivals grind back into the game. At halftime Astoria led 25-20.
The third quarter was more of the same as the Fishermen were still flat and lost a lot of their early momentum. This allowed Seaside to tie the game up at 27. But that’s as close as things would get. Astoria proceeded to go on an insane scoring barrage to end the third quarter. The Fishermen took a 27-27 game to 46-31 at the end of three and continued the momentum to win the game 60-39.
Head coach Alex Eterno was happy to continue winning and said the Fishermen remain focused on the task at hand.
“Our kids did a good job of making second-half adjustments,” Eterno said. “We shot the ball pretty well in the second half which helped us push the lead, but defensively our adjustments helped extend it to 20 plus.”
When asked what this win meant for his seniors, Eterno was very happy. Not only did the Fishermen seniors finally get to experience beating their rivals, they also got to celebrate one of their own, Quin Gohr, joining the thousand point club.
“It feels great for them.” Eterno said. “We talked about it since they were freshman that those guys down the road are kings of the Cowapa’s and they still are until somebody else wins it. Beating them and sweeping them for the first time in a while is an awesome feeling.”
The Fishermen held a celebration commemorating senior Gohr breaking 1,000 points. According to Eterno, the senior passed the mark sometime early in league season, but the school decided to honor the senior at the conclusion of Tuesday evening’s game. Gohr was joined by his teammates and then took pictures with his mom, dad and younger sister Kyah.
For the scoring leaders, Gohr led the way with 22 points, Kanon Huber had 13 and Cooper Jones had 11. As for Seaside, Hayden Halsen was the lone player in double figures with 10.
Seaside girls en fuego
Seaside girls were en fuego Tuesday night.
After not shooting the ball great against Astoria the first two games, the Seagulls made sure to change that on Tuesday.
Like always, the Seagulls press tore apart the Fishermen, but unlike the previous two games, the Seagulls shot the ball incredibly well and put up a 50 spot in the first half, which is a crazy amount of points for high school basketball regardless of the classification. An opening 9-0 start was all the Seagulls needed to cruise home to victory.
With head coach Marla Olstedt getting her team ready for the postseason, she said starting fast is something they have been focusing on. The Seagulls took a 50-12 lead into the halftime locker room and cruised to a 63-22 victory.
“I’ve been challenging my girls the last couple weeks to start with good momentum,” Olstedt said. “Kudos to them, they were ready and that made the world of difference. If we can start like that every game I would be very happy.”
This win was also sweet for Olstedt since the Seagulls have been on the losing end of so many Clatsop Clashes in recent years. She said beating any team three times in a row is very difficult to do.
“That’s always been a challenge,” Olstedt said. “There’s a saying it’s hard to beat a team three times. We talked about that a little bit, but we also really try to focus on what we can do to control that. I will say the girls aced it, they did a great job from the start.”
Seaside had another balanced scoring game with three players in double figures. Jahzara Marshall and Lili Miller had 15 and Carly Corder added 13.
Knappa takes care of business
The Knappa basketball teams took care of business in the first round of the league playoffs.
The Knappa girls team rebounded from the loss against Clatskanie to win 36-29, while the boys had a strong showing from both Jasper Teague and Orrin Jacobson to defeat Nestucca 70-46. Both Jacobson and Teague had 20 points on the night.
Next up for the Knappa girls is a rematch against Nestucca and for the boys it’s another tough game against Portland Christian. Both of those games will be on Saturday at Vernonia High School. The boys’ game will be at 4 p.m. and girls’ game starts at 6 p.m.
