Mac West broke the game wide open with a thunderous swing and then shut it down from the mound.
West launched a three-run home run over the left-field fence as part of a six-run fifth inning, then completed a dominant seven-inning shutout to lead Verdigris past Victory Christian 7-0 in a District 4A-6 home win Monday evening.
The junior left-hander was in control all night, striking out four while scattering just two hits and four walks across a complete-game effort. He never allowed a runner past third base and got stronger as the game wore on, retiring the Conquerors in order in three different innings.
At the plate, West’s blast capped a decisive fifth inning that saw the Cardinals break a 1-0 game wide open.
Ethan Hushbeck delivered the first blow with a two-run single, and Conner Stump added a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt to bring in another before West’s long ball made it 6-0. Landon Wine singled later in the inning and eventually scored on Stump’s bunt in his second at-bat of the frame, pushing the lead to its final margin.
Verdigris (19-8, 11-2 district) had taken a 1-0 lead in the third when Boston Acosta drove in Hunter Hutichison with a single to right.
Acosta had a big night at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Wine finished 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, while Hushbeck went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a walk.
Victory Christian (13-12, 9-2) threatened in the third with back-to-back singles from Parker McFarland and Journey Boswell, but West escaped the jam with a pair of flyouts and a groundout.
The Cardinals didn’t commit an error in the field and were sharp defensively, turning one double play and getting strong infield work from Lane, Wine and Hastings.
Verdigris will travel to Victory Christian for the second leg of the district series at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
