Apr. 29—HARROD — Since starting the season 3-4, Allen East's baseball team has won seven games in a row after beating Crestview 5-3 on Monday.
So, how have the Mustangs been able to rewrite the script of their season so fast?
"We feel good. We're performing well offensively and defensively and on the mound we're working with some pitchers," Allen East coach Tyler Stevens said.
Junior right-hander Jackson Thompson, who got a complete game victory on Monday, said, "I think it's been our intensity and our focus and our discipline. We've been more disciplined at the plate and on the field.
"Starting with our warm-ups, I've been preaching discipline. Earlier, when we were on our little cold streak, we'd just come out here and we weren't ready, we were just going through the motions. But now I think we've finally put it all together and we just come out hot."
Allen East (10-4, 3-1 Northwest Conference) scored a run without a hit in the first inning, then repeated that feat in the second inning with the help of three errors by Crestview (6-7, 4-2 NWC).
The Mustangs' offense awakened in a big way in the bottom of the fourth inning when it scored three runs, led by four hits — a leadoff single by Levi Clum, back-to-back triples by Ethan Hershberger and Travis Stanley and a single by Brady Brooks.
"We always seem to start slow offensively and then as the game goes on, we pick it up," Stevens said.
"Jackson did a really good job for us today. He really kept us in that ball game and we produced really well offensively, too. We hope to take that momentum into the rest of the week and throughout the rest of the season," he said.
Adcock saves the game for Elida
ELIDA — A game in which the two teams combined for eight errors ended with a spectacular defensive play — a catch that secured a 6-4 win for Elida over Bath in a Western Buckeye League baseball game at Ed Sandy Field last Thursday.
With the Bulldogs leading 6-4 in the top of the seventh inning and the bases loaded, Bath's Richard Rope crushed a line drive to centerfield, which appeared destined to land behind Elida centerfielder Ben Adcock.
But Adcock tracked the ball and made a leaping catch with his back to the infield for the final out.
"I was a little nervous" is how Elida coach Tyler Leatherman described his reaction when Rope launched the ball to centerfield.
"Actually, I had just moved him (Adcock) back two or three pitches before that. He just got a good jump. He just made a great play. If he hadn't, we'd still be playing," he said. "I trust guys to do what they need to do."
Elida has put its trust in five freshmen starters this season — second baseman Jack Daugherty, shortstop Colton Graham, first baseman Gavin Tickle, third baseman Jonan Snyder and Adcock.
The Bulldogs got a complete game victory from their No. 1 pitcher, Ryan McGue (7 innings, 5 hits, 4 runs, 2 earned runs, 4 walks, 7 strikeouts).
"He had one bad inning but that's not on him. We had two big errors that led to runs. When McGue is on the mound, he's just a bulldog. We know what we're going to get from him. He's that kind of guy who wants those big wins," Leatherman said. "Every time he steps on the mound, it gives us the opportunity to win."
Shawnee's Daily twirls gem
SHAWNEE — Carder Daily's approach when he pitched 6 1/3 innings of one-hit baseball during Shawnee's 3-1 win over Lima Central Catholic last Wednesday was about as basic as possible.
It was here's a fastball, see if you can hit it.
LCC couldn't and that goes a long way in explaining how Shawnee got a much-needed win after losing nine of its first 10 games and why LCC is still looking for a win that might become a turning point in its season.
Daily, a senior right-hander who has topped out at 87 miles an hour on his fastball, had been limited to around 15 pitches this season — all in relief appearances — because of arm pain before throwing around 125 pitches on Wednesday.
All but one of those pitches were fastballs and the one outlier was a change-up that was outside the strike zone.
Daily struck out 9 and walked 10 in his 6-plus innings on the mound. Four of his walks were in the top of the first inning and LCC's only run came on a bases-loaded wild pitch in that inning.
"It was an interesting stat line," Daily said about his strikeouts-to-walks ratio. "I was just glad I could limit them to one run. We were 1-9 and needed a win.
"That first inning, I was telling myself to just get it over the plate. I was pretty confident they couldn't touch my fastball. I was just trying to get it over the plate," he said.
