The door isn’t completely closed on Marcus Rashford’s time at FC Barcelona, but the club has set a very specific, and difficult, ultimatum for his stay.
According to Diario SPORT, the club is close to fully deciding on his departure because the €30 million transfer fee is deemed too high for a player who, despite his numbers, would likely be a “luxury reserve” in next season’s rotation.
The only way the board would pivot is if Manchester United accepts another season-long loan. This would allow Barça to fit him within La Liga’s FFP rules, though Sky Sports suggests Rashford would also need to take a pay cut on top of that for it to work. While the player is reportedly willing to pressure United to make this happen, the English club is tired of temporary fixes. They want a clean break and a permanent sale, especially with Newcastle United reportedly ready to pay the full €30 million asking price.
Even though Rashford wants to stay in Spain, where he has thrived under Hansi Flick, the club is already actively scouting replacements. The technical staff is looking at high-potential, lower-cost profiles like Benfica’s Andreas Schjelderup and Mika Godts of Ajax.
As reported by the BBC, those close to the forward feel the narrative that he is “expendable” is unfair given his output. Statistically, he has been one of the most efficient players in Spain this year, averaging a direct goal contribution every 92 minutes – a rate that puts him in the same bracket as Kylian Mbappé and Raphinha.
