Banana Ball time has begun in Jacksonville.

The offbeat baseball variant arrived July 2 for the first of three games at VyStar Ballpark leading into the holiday weekend, with the Loco Beach Coconuts facing the Indianapolis Clowns before a packed crowd.

The Coconuts won the series opener 4-1 in the organization's inning-based scoring, but as usual with Banana Ball, the numbers on the scoreboard were just one part of the entertainment at the traditional home of the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp.

General festivities highlighted the Banana Ball events throughout the afternoon and evening, with the Coconuts also holding the edge in runs (6 to 3) and "tricks" (10 to 9).

The series continues with games at 7 p.m. Friday, July 3 and at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 4. Both games have been sold out for months, although some tickets remain listed on secondary markets.
