The Orioles addressed some depth needs on Thursday.
The Baltimore Orioles announced multiple roster moves on their off-day on Thursday, ahead of a three-game series against the Atlanta Braves.
Baltimore designated outfielder Johnathan Rodriguez for assignment today. Rodriguez had played a key role in Wednesday night's win that snapped the Boston Red Sox’s 15-game win streak.
Catcher Yohel Pozo was claimed off waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals, who had DFA’d him six days ago. Pozo has been optioned to Triple-A Norfolk. Outfielder Rudy Martin Jr. was claimed by the Toronto Blue Jays after the Orioles DFA’d him earlier this week.
Rodriguez had been up and down with the Orioles this season, making brief stints. His first hit as an Oriole came in the form of an RBI double last night, but his time with the team has now come to a close in a roster crunch.
The 26-year-old outfielder had played in just seven games this season and saw 15 plate appearances. Rodriguez, who was acquired from the Cleveland Guardians in March, has been a consistent threat at the plate in his minor league career, posting a .295/.386/.508 slashline. He will likely be on waivers this week.
The acquisition of Pozo indicates the Orioles want more comfortability at the catcher position, especially with the recent injuries to Adley Rutschman and Samuel Basallo. The move may be more a need than a necessity, which has come suddenly for Baltimore.
Rutschman was placed on the injured list with left wrist inflammation three days ago, while Basallo joined him there yesterday with right shoulder inflammation.
With journeymen catchers Sam Huff and Chadwick Tromp being the only healthy options behind the plate, options at the position may be an urgent need, and Pozo gives the team another catcher. He had been a depth piece for the Cardinals, as he logged over 300 innings at catcher last season.
Martin, Baltimore’s latest departure by way of DFA, has yet to make his major league debut and had not been on the Orioles’ 40-man roster for long prior to the transaction.
The 30-year-old outfielder has enjoyed his best campaign yet in the minors, hitting .284 this year with a wRC+ of 127. Standing at 5-foot-8, Martin had lacked power throughout his career, but has seen a huge jump there in hitting eight homers so far this season.
The Kansas City Royals had traded Martin to the Orioles this past week. The outfielder now provides potential outfield depth for a division rival in Toronto.
