Kyler Murray has his fair share of critics since joining the NFL in 2019. The Minnesota Vikings quarterback brings that criticism over to his new team as he preps to take hold of the starting job in Minnesota.

One former Murray teammate has some of that in common with him. Former Oklahoma quarterback and now Tampa Bay Buccaneers star Baker Mayfield has been a lightning rod in his own right when it comes to criticism. Some of that has been brought on by his own behavior, but some of the criticism has been unfair.

Given Mayfield and Murray's shared experiences, Mayfield has an easy time relating to some of the undue negativity that Murray receives. The former Oklahoma teammate shared why Murray is set up to be successful with his new team in Minnesota.

“Coming from someone who has been in a similar situation where you think you’re going to be somewhere forever and just needing a new change of scenery… I think this fresh start for him is going to be amazing. Kyler gets a bad wrap. People want to put a certain persona on him.

Luckily we get him early in the season before he gets too hot."

The two quarterbacks shared the same quarterback room in the 2017 season where it could be argued Murray was the best backup quarterback in college football. After Mayfield secured a Heisman Trophy and was drafted as the No. 1 overall pick, Murray accomplished both feats the following season. Even so, neither quarterback's NFL career has gone smoothly.

Mayfield succeeded right away in Cleveland with the Browns before having to reinvent himself and ultimately settle in as the quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Now, Murray is looking to do the same with his fresh opportunity with the Vikings.

It's hard to say the only reason that either quarterback gets criticized is because they are misunderstood. Mayfield's fiery competitive nature often goes over the top in heated exchanges with opposition. Murray does not take losing lightly.

Despite whatever perceived flaws either quarterback has, the talent and skill level of both players has been evident on the field throughout their NFL careers. Mayfield brought the Browns out of obscurity to the postseason and now is the leader of the Buccaneers' franchise. Murray has a chance to become a Viking for the remainder of his career.

Murray will have the chance to silence his detractors when the Vikings take the field against the Green Bay Packers in Week 1.
