The Tampa Bay Rays are feeling it when they are home at Tropicana Field.
After losing 5 of 6 games out on the West coast this past week, the team is back in Tampa Bay as well as back to their winning ways after taking down the Washington Nationals 5-2 in the series opener.
This marks the 10th series-opening game win at home this season, and they are 25-9 overall at the Trop. It's the best home winning percentage in all of baseball.
The team got behind early, but home runs from Jonathan Aranda and Jonny DeLuca changed the narrative and gave Tampa Bay the lead for good. It was the 18th come from behind victory of the year for the Rays.
Rays Manager Kevin Cash loved what he saw from Aranda following the big time homer. "We haven't had one of those in a while, and Johnny stayed on or looked like he got a pitch maybe just out of the zone, carried it off the foul pole. Really impressive piece of hitting by him."
Griffin Jax had another solid start for the Rays. He continues to be able to give Kevin Cash at least 5 innings over his last 3 starts, exactly what the staff needs so they can use the strengths inside their bullpen.
Speaking of the bullpen, they went 4 innings strong and did not allow a run or a walk during that span. Kevin Kelly and Bryan Baker once again stepped up, and Steven Matz and Garrett Cleavinger stepped up as well for the first time in a while to ensure a victory for the Rays.
"I was happy for Matt. I know he's been grinding through it a little bit right now, but his stuff is really good," said Cash. "The ball's coming out of his hand really, really well. He executed pitches, got his five really big outs, so that was a pivotal point in the game."
Tampa Bay will look to begin a winning streak as they prepare to play the second game of the series against the Nationals on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 4:10 PM ET.
