While a sudden summer storm carried away the majority of Aurora fans from TCO Stadium Friday night, the inclement weather couldn’t cool off the soccer team that calls Eagan home.
Minnesota scored the majority of its goals in a 5-0 win against Edgewater Castle FC in the first half as sunshine turned to sprinkles. The home supporters got to see Ai Kitagawa logged her team-leading eighth goal, as well as Skye Leach, Jeanette Fieldsand and Gracie Dunaway all tally scores as the Aurora took a 4-0 halftime lead.
Most fans did not witness the final goal of the game, scored by Maia Tabion in the 70th minute. The stands were largely empty by that point due to a stadium evacuation, forced due to lightning in the area as part of a squall line that blew through Eagan not long after the second half started.
After the conditions cleared an hour later, both teams returned to the pitch to finish out the contest. Goalkeeper Isaac Ranson logged his second clean sheet of the season.
With the win, Minnesota improved to 8-0 on the season. The Aurora lead the USL W’s Heartland Division with 24 points and the team has yet to allow a goal in league play.
Next up, the Aurora host Sioux Falls City FC at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
