The Oklahoma Sooners opened their three-game series down in Austin with a huge 3-0 win over the Texas Longhorns on Friday night.
Overcoming two rain delays, sophomore pitcher Audrey Lowry was outstanding in a pitcher's duel with Texas' Tegan Kavan. Lowry earned the complete game shutout, scattering six hits and a walk over her seven innings while striking out four. She threw just 90 pitches in shutting out the Longhorns, who came into the game averaging 8.44 runs per game.
Along the way, Lowry was aided by a strong defensive performance behind her. Kai Minor made a diving play in center field for a key out. After Ashton Maloney led off the fifth inning with a triple, Ella Parker gunned her down at home plate on what would have been a sacrifice fly. Maloney was the only Longhorn to reach third base on the evening.
At the plate, the Sooners wasted little time getting the scoring going. Kai Minor led the game off with a single, and Parker hit a two-run home run on a 1-1 pitch from Kavan to give Oklahoma an early 2-0 lead. It was Parker's 18th home run of the season.
In the sixth, Isabela Emerling came through in the clutch once again with her 14th home run of the season to give the Sooners a 3-0 lead in the late stages of the game.
While Lowry got the win, Kavan was fantastic in her own right. She kept the Sooners' bats off balance in her complete game performance. She recorded 13 strikeouts and prevented Oklahoma from taking advantage of six hits and four walks in the game.
Hitters three through six in the lineup for the Sooners, Kendall Wells, Gabbie Garcia, and Kasidi Pickering, combined to go 0-10 with a walk. Wells and Pickering each struck out three times against Kavan. Minor was the only Sooner to record two hits. Parker reached base three times with her home run and a pair of walks.
With the win, the Sooners moved to 39-3 on the season and 12-1 in SEC play. They remained two games up on Alabama, who beat Auburn 1-0 on Friday. The Longhorns fell to three games back of the Sooners, tied with Florida in the loss column. It was the Longhorns fourth SEC loss in their last five games, dating back to the series finale against Texas A&M two weekends ago.
Oklahoma and Texas will be back in action for another primetime affair on Saturday night at 7 p.m. CT on ESPN.
