One of Auburn football's most prized transfer portal hauls from the 2025 cycle is set to depart the Plains after one season.
Justin Hokanson of On3/Rivals reports that quarterback Jackson Arnold is expected to enter the transfer portal once the window opens in January after spending just one season in Auburn. Arnold won the starting quarterback job at the beginning of the season, but his struggles on the field ultimately led to him being benched in favor of fellow 2025 transfer addition, Ashton Daniels.
Arnold completed 63% of his passes for 1,309 yards and six touchdowns for Auburn. His production ranks No. 16 in the SEC in both passing yards and passing touchdowns. He was also one of the SEC's most-sacked quarterbacks, as his 30 sacks ranked No. 3 in the conference behind South Carolina's LaNorris Sellers and Mississippi State's Blake Shapen. He started Auburn's first eight games before being pulled in Auburn's win over Arkansas after completing 7-of-12 passes for 73 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Since the Arkansas game, he appeared in two games, where he completed 5-of-8 passes for 46 yards and no scores.
With Ashton Daniels and Deuce Knight set to return to Auburn, Arnold will look for a new home. New Auburn head coach Alex Golesh's approach to quarterback development is "system-oriented" and it will be interesting to see how Daniels and Knight factor into offensive scheme next season.
"I think elite coaches can say, 'Man, this is the best quarterback that we have. Now let’s tailor the system for him.' It’s truly the same for every other position is making sure that you’re fitting your system around the quarterback," Golesh said in his introductory press conference. "I think that’s what's so unique about what we do offensively. If you really study us and you look at what we do, it’s not what we talk about being able to adjust earlier, but it’s not plug and play. What we do schematically changes year to year. It grows as the year goes, as the quarterback grows."
Arnold is the fifth player to declare his intention to enter the transfer portal, joining wide receiver Perry Thompson, defensive back Raion Strader, defensive lineman Antonio Coleman, and linebacker Caleb Wheatland. The next transfer portal window opens Jan. 2 and will close on Jan. 16.
