Auburn baseball earned its first midweek win of the season thanks to late-game fireworks.
Auburn first baseman and reigning SEC Freshman of the Week Ethin Bingaman stepped to the plate with two outs and his team down by a run to the visiting West Georgia Wolves. Bingaman took a cut on the second pitch of the at-bat to right field, deep enough to score Eric Guevara from third base to tie the game at 3-3 and open the door for Bub Terrell to become the hero and lift the Tigers to a win. On the third pitch of the at-bat, Terrell golfed the ball to mid-left field for a base hit. Bingaman, who was at second base following a wild pitch, sprinted home in a risky move and narrowly beat out the throw at the plate to score Auburn's winning run.
The run pushed No. 7 Auburn to a 4-3 victory over the West Georgia Wolves on Wednesday at Plainsman Park in Auburn, Alabama.
Terrell recalled a conversation he had with Auburn assistant coach Gabe Gross during the at-bat that calmed his nerves and allowed him to make the game-winning hit.
“Gabe (Gross) called a timeout, and he told me to just slow everything down and put a ball into play,” Terrell said postgame. “We talk about pushing the ball forward and not letting the catcher call the last pitch or leave it up to the umpire, so we just wanted to put the ball into play and hopefully find the grass.”
The win pushes Auburn to 7-1 on the season and fuels its momentum heading into a crucial weekend series against Nebraska, beginning Friday at Plainsman Park. Chase Fralick, Ethin Bingaman, and Brandon McCraine each recorded multiple hits, while Bingaman, Terrell, and Mason McCraine each logged an RBI. It was another solid outing for Andreas Alvarez on the mound as he struck out seven batters over 5 2/3 innings with five hits and two earned runs allowed. However, Ryan Hetzler earned the win with one walk and one strikeout in the 9th inning.
Auburn baseball will now shift its focus to Nebraska, which comes to town for a three-game series beginning Friday at 6 p.m. CT at Plainsman Park. The Cornhuskers are receiving votes in this week's USA TODAY Coaches Poll after taking down No. 17 Florida State on day three of the Amegy College Baseball Series last weekend in Arlington, Texas.
