The Atlanta Hawks are frequently linked to Trey Murphy III, and it makes sense. Murphy III is widely viewed as available, and as a high-volume three-point shooter, he'd fit seamlessly in Atlanta. Hawks fans have been firing up the trade machine as a result, though whether those proposals hold up is a different question.
It takes two sides to make a trade work. Murphy III is a perfect complement to most NBA rosters, which is why he's one of the hottest names on the market, and the Pelicans won't give him away for nothing. At the same time, the Hawks will want to hold onto most of their key players. If Atlanta can build a package primarily around draft capital, that's the preferred route for a win-now move as consequential as acquiring Murphy III.
Here's what that deal might look like.

The initial reaction from many Hawks fans might be that this is a lot of draft capital to give up. It is. Still, this deal has Atlanta keeping Dyson Daniels and Onyeka Okongwu. Murphy III is one of the most coveted trade targets in the league, and acquiring him without touching core players requires exactly that kind of draft investment.
If anything, the toughest part of this deal for the Hawks is parting with Zaccharie Risacher. Hawks fans should wish him well in New Orleans, but this trade would cement his Atlanta tenure as one of the more disappointing runs for a No. 1 overall pick in NBA history. Even if he figures it out elsewhere, it won't be with the team that used the top pick on him.
That's life in the NBA. Murphy III went 17th in the 2021 NBA Draft and has been sensational since. The Hawks should avoid the sunk cost fallacy and recognize that moving off Risacher is worth it if it means keeping their more productive players.
It's hard to say whether the Pelicans would even accept this package, but regaining control of their 2027 first-rounder could be too rare an opportunity to pass on. Paired with a couple of extra firsts, that combination could be enough to finally pry Murphy III off the trade market, and it would let Hawks fans stop wondering whether he's ever going to end up in Atlanta.
