Athletics ROTY Nick Kurtz gets $190 million contract update after Tyler Sodestrom, Jacob Wilson extensions originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Athletics spent the offseason making some big in-house moves, extending their young stars in Tyler Soderstrom and Jacob Wilson, but they've yet to extend the crown jewel of their offense and team, Nick Kurtz. With what Kurtz showed he was capable of in 2025, the A's better get to extending him ASAP.
While he finds it unlikely, Fansided’s Chris Landers predicts that the A’s will offer Kurtz a 10-year, $190 million extension. Anything lower than that, and Kurtz could tell them to kick rocks.

“The A's have locked up just about every other member of their promising young core. But the crown jewel is Kurtz, who wasn't just great as a rookie last season — he put together one of the best first seasons in the Majors we've seen in recent history, including 36 homers in just 117 games. No doubt the team would love to sign him to an extension as well. But there's just one problem: It's almost impossible to find a first baseman this good, this fast who signed an extension that could serve as a starting point. Murray surveyed agents around the league to try and find out what a deal might look like, and the responses ... well, let's just say A's fans shouldn't hold their breath…But it does reinforce the idea that the A's are going to have to blow his camp out of the water in order to get him to sign away any of his free agency years. Julio Rodriguez signed a seven-year, $119.3 million extension after his sensational rookie season that could be worth north of $200 million if he opts into the final five years. We'll use that as a rough comp, with some taken off the top because Rodriguez is an excellent defender at a premium position,” Landers wrote.
This past season, Kurtz slashed .290/.383/.619/1.002 with 26 doubles, 36 home runs, and 86 RBI in 117 games. If the A’s lock him down, they could have a superstar cleanup hitter for the next decade.

The only problem, as Landers notes, is Kurtz may definitely wait it out for a bigger deal. Anonymous agents have said he gets less than 10 years, he should tell the A’s to, once again, kick rocks, and that if he waits, he could get himself a Juan Soto-type deal.
Hopefully, the A’s move to Las Vegas inspires Kurtz to want to stay, and maybe whatever the A’s offer him is enough. Otherwise, A’s fans better relish the years they have with him until he enters free agency.
