AT&T Stadium is finally going to get curtains for a football match

It is happening. Soon enough there will be afternoon football played at AT&T Stadium and curtains will be hung to combat the sun’s infamous glare within the building. Finally.

Oh. The thing is. It’s for futbol. Not football.

The curtains at AT&T Stadium will be up during an afternoon football game this year — just not during one played by the Dallas Cowboys.

The Cowboys’ home will host five FIFA World Cup group stage matches this summer and curtains will be up to block the notorious sunlight that shines through the west-facing windows of the stadium during the 6 p.m. CT fixture between Japan and Sweden on June 25, a FIFA spokesman confirmed to The Athletic. Front Office Sports was first to report.

This summer will bring the World Cup and AT&T Stadium is set to host group stage matches. Given the scheduling of those matches there was the issue of the sun, the one that everyone associated with the Dallas Cowboys, save for Jerry Jones, seems to despise. The glare was likely going to be an issue. Not anymore.

We have had this discussion so many times that most people have just given up. Curtains are hung all of the time in the building for things like concerts, but this does seem to sting a little bit more as it is sport being played at its highest level. You would think that it would make sense to increase the quality of the environment for the game itself to happen, but that just doesn’t happen when it comes to actual Cowboys games.

This point rings true relative to the actual surface as well. Consider that AT&T Stadium (like all other NFL venues that are hosting matches) installed grass for the event as opposed to turf that is used for NFL games.

This, like the curtains, is something that Cowboys players (and NFL players in general) have advocated for to no avail. That is simply the way things go.

For what it’s worth, the Cowboys will “only” combat the sun in its most intense way on three occasions this season. The afternoon window is typically when things reach a point of ridiculousness regarding the glare and the Cowboys have three home games in that timeframe in 2026: Washington, San Francisco, and Philadelphia (Thanksgiving).
