Arizona State women’s basketball survives another day.
Arizona had every chance to squash ASU’s chances of making the NCAA tournament, but the Sun Devils came out with a 54-51 win in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament.
The Wildcats had the final possession and time to close the one-possession gap, but Daniah Trammell’s 3-point attempt with an expiring clock clanked out. Arizona tried to give guard Sumayah Sugapong, the team’s best shooter, the ball, but Last-Tear Poa matched up well against her.
ASU’s top scorers, Gabby Elliott and McKinna Brackens, were held to a combined nine points, but players like forward Heloisa Carrera and Marley Washenitz stepped up offensively with 16 and eight points, respectively.
Freshman Amaya Williams handled the pressure well as several players dealt with foul trouble, posting seven bench points in 24 minutes.
Poa’s pull-up jumper with 1:55 left in the game was the deciding factor as both teams missed a combined five shots down the stretch. Neither team led for more than four points in the second half.
The Wildcats looked more efficient at tip-off, draining all four field goals for an 8-2 lead and disrupting ASU’s flow with their zone.
But ASU adjusted and caught up with Washenitz, attacking the perimeter and scoring six of her eight points off 3-pointers in the first half. Carrera began what became ASU’s best asset, helping the Sun Devils score 18 paint points in the first half. ASU edged Arizona, 36-18, in the paint overall.
The Wildcats lost their best rebounder when Nora Francois was ejected with 8:49 left in the game when she elbowed Carrera in the face, picking up her second flagrant foul and fifth personal foul.
Francois’ first flagrant was called with 6:10 left in the second quarter when she hit Washenitz in the face as both went for a rebound. Francois posted a team-leading seven rebounds in 19 minutes.
ASU’s time at the Big 12 tournament will continue with No. 7 seed Iowa State on March 5, at 4:30 p.m., on ESPN+. The Cyclones handed ASU a 26-point loss in their only meeting on Feb. 18.
According to ESPN’s Charlie Creme during the game’s broadcast, the Sun Devils will need to beat ISU and No. 2 seed West Virginia in the third round to have a chance at making the NCAA tournament. As of March 4, the Sun Devils are projected to be the first four teams out.
