TONIGHT’S GAME: The first-place Houston Astros (58-55), winners of six straight, will open a three-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays (52-60 tonight at Daikin Park.
RHP Cristian Javier (1-1, 7.17 ERA) will get the start for the Astros opposite the RHP Shane Bieber (2-2, 5.74 ERA) and the Blue Jays.
ABOUT JAVIER: RHP Cristian Javier is making his fifth start of the season and his second since returning from the IL in early July. He’s primarily pitched out of the bullpen since his return, making four relief appearances and a spot start. Javier earned tonight’s start thanks to his last outing on July 27 at LAA, when he tossed 5.0 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts in relief.
WINNING WAYS: The Astros have won six straight games, which is their longest winning streak since they won eight straight from Aug. 6-14, 2024. The Astros have also won 11 of their last 12 games. The Astros are now three games over .500, their first time at that mark since being 6-3 following their ninth game of the season on April 4.
THE TURNAROUND: After a slow start to the season, the Astros are 38-24 since May 22, which ties as the best record in the AL in that span. On that date, the Astros were 20-31, 11 games under, which is their low water mark for the season.

MINOR LEAGUE HONORS: RHP Bryce Mayer, the Astros top pitching prospect, was named the Double A Texas League Pitcher of the Week for the week of July 27-Aug. 2. Mayer made one start last week, tossing 6.0 shutout innings with nine strikeouts, while allowing three hits and no walks in the Hooks 7-0 win over Frisco on Saturday.
SILVER BOOT SECURED: The Astros finished their season series with a 9-4 record against the Rangers, securing them the 2026 Silver Boot. The Astros have now won the Silver Boot in 10 consecutive seasons (every year since 2017), during which the Astros have gone 102-55 vs. the Rangers.
THAT’S OFFENSIVE: The Astros rank second in the AL in home runs (155) and third in runs scored (528), just behind the Twins (532) and White Sox (531). Also among AL clubs, the Astros rank first in slugging (.418) and in OPS (.739), and second in batting average (.245), OBP (.321) and hits (936).
JULY HONORS: Earlier today, DH Yordan Alvarez was named the AL Player of the Month for July. This marks the fourth career AL Player of the Month Award for Alvarez and his second this season. In July, Alvarez hit .360 (31×86) with nine HR, 22 RBI, a .467 OBP, a .721 SLG, and a 1.188 OPS in 23 games.
MVP-CALIBER: Yordan Alvarez is a strong AL MVP candidate as he leads the league in all three Triple Crown categories, ranking first in batting average (.330), HR (35), and RBI (84). Additionally, he currently leads MLB in OPS (1.092), OBP (.442), SLG (.650), extra-base hits (59), and TB (262), and in the AL, he ranks first in hits (133), and runs (77), and third in walks (77).
HEAVY TRAFFIC: DH Yordan Alvarez has reached base safely in 18 straight games (since July 10), batting .438 (28×64) with 15 runs, eight doubles, six home runs, 17 RBI, 18 walks, a .566 OBP and a 1.410 OPS during the streak. Alvarez also has on-base streaks of 25 games (May 22-June 19) and 22 games (April 4-28) this season.
GOOD INTENTIONS: DH Yordan Alvarez was walked twice intentionally on Saturday vs. TEX, giving him an MLB-leading 22 intentional walks on the season. Alvarez’s 22 intentional walks ties as the third-highest total in a single season by an Astros player in club history, along with Lance Berkman, who was walked intentionally 22 times in 2006.
STREAKING: SS Jeremy Peña is on a 14-game hitting streak, in which he’s hit .433 (26×60) with three doubles, one triple, seven homers, 14 RBI and a 1.336 OPS during the streak. Peña’s streak matches his career high (also, April 8-23, 2025), and is the longest active streak in the Majors.
LOAD ‘EM FOR LAMONTE: OF LaMonte Wade has reached safely in all six of his plate appearances with the bases loaded this season, going 4×4 with one double, one homer, 10 RBI and two walks with the bases juiced. With RISP, Wade is hitting .412 (7×17) with a .500 OBP this season.
WHAT A RELIEF: LHP Josh Hader, who is 15-for-15 in save chances with a 1.17 ERA, recorded his 77th career save as an Astro on Saturday, moving him past RHP Fred Gladding (76) for fifth place in saves all-time among Astros relievers. He now trails RHP Ryan Pressly (111) for fourth on that all-time list.
STALKING 500: RHP Bryan Abreu has 499 career strikeouts, needing just one strikeout to reach 500 for his career. He would become just the fourth reliever in franchise history to record 500 strikeouts with the club, joining LHP Billy Wagner (694), RHP Brad Lidge (557) and RHP Dave Smith (529).
TODAY IN ASTROS HISTORY: 2019 – Four Astros combine to toss the 12th no-hitter in club history in a 9-0 shellacking of the Mariners. RHP Aaron Sanchez tosses the first 6.0 frames before consecutive scoreless innings by RHP Will Harris, RHP Joe Biagini and RHP Chris Devenski. C Martín Maldonado was behind the plate for the combined no-no. The no-hitter might have been the most improbable in club history, with Sanchez, Biagini and Maldonado all joining the club just four days prior, at the trading deadline on July 31, 2019.
