Houston Astros infielder Shay Whitcomb hasn't had many opportunities to shine in the major leagues, but he's already making the most of them in the World Baseball Classic.
Whitcomb, whose mother is Korean, hit not one, but two home runs in his team's opening game of the tournament against Czechia on Monday, March 5, in Tokyo. Korea won 11-4.
The 27-year-old has recorded just 79 plate appearances during the past two seasons with the Astros, with a .178 average and one homer in his major league career. But he connected for a solo shot in the third inning to give Korea a 6-1 lead, then added a two-run blast in the fifth to put his team up 8-1.
Whitcomb is one of three Korean-Americans playing in the WBC, along with fellow major leaguers Jahmai Jones and Dane Dunning.
He also homered in Korea's exhibition game last week against the Orix Buffaloes.
The World Baseball Classic got underway on Sunday with Australia shutting out Taiwan 3-0 at the Tokyo Dome.
Pool play will continue through March 11, with the championship game March 17 in Miami.
