Asotin's Ells signs with UCLA baseball

An Asotin High School alum will soon be playing Big Ten baseball.

Cody Ells will be taking his talents to Westwood to play for UCLA, the program announced Wednesday.

Ells, who had previously committed to play for Lewis-Clark State, first heard from UCLA following the MLB draft in July when 11 Bruins were selected.

The mass exodus meant that UCLA had an opening in its outfield and Ells said that, while it will be a "dog fight" for playing time, he believes he can see the field his freshman year.

Ells said that he is grateful for LC State and the opportunity the school gave him.

"All the hours I've spent training in their cages with their coaches, it's been unbelievable the amount of time that they put in to helping me become (who) I am," Ells said. "That place is incredible. I love it. It's always gonna be my hometown team. I love that team. I love that coaching staff. Love the area. Just the time was right, and I couldn't say no to the chance to come down here (to UCLA)."

At UCLA, Ells said he will be MLB draft-eligible following his sophomore year, and anticipates spending 2-3 years in school.

"Baseball right now is my entire life," Ells said. "My eyes are set on MLB, getting to the highest level."

Other standout signings

Adrik Jenkin of Colfax is a standout signee headed to Vanguard University to play men's basketball at the NCAA Division II level.

At Colfax, Jenkin scored over 2,000 career points and led the Bulldogs to a Washington Class 2B state title in his final year.

Genesee had three athletes sign their national letters of intent, including Benjamin Farr, who will participate in track and field and cross country at Lewis-Clark State College; Chloe Grieser, who is headed to play women's basketball at Walla Walla Community College and trackster Lizzie Egland, headed to the College of Idaho of the NAIA.

Kendrick's Hali Anderson is set to play women's basketball at Lewis-Clark State.

Elena Flansburg of Garfield-Palouse will be a two-sport athlete at Whitman College of NCAA Division III, playing both volleyball and women's basketball.
