Q: I believe that Erik Spoelstra needs to humble himself and try to be more creative with Nikola Jovic rather than the Heat trading him for aging Klay Thompson, which I could totally imagine the Heat doing. They need to either maximize Jovic’s strengths to help them win, or at a minimum build his value before trading him. Now that they have taken the big leap with Giannis, it is time to be wise and patient. – Paul.
A: But it’s a two-way street, and Nikola Jovic also has to be open to what is needed, which, at the moment, looks like time in a power role. In some ways, with the current composition of the roster, Niko stands as somewhat of a swing player. If he can make the same jump that Jaime Jaquez Jr. did last year, then he could prove invaluable. But that means better finishing and more of a willingness to play toward the betterment of the team. There is value there. But, agreed, it has to be rebuilt as he begins his four-year extension. At the moment, not sure anyone is taking on that contract without significant sweeteners, the type of sweeteners the Heat largely lack.
Q: It sounds as if everyone we could get is flawed. So how do we fill out the roster? – Samuel.
A: The point of my story with a scout evaluating the Heat’s options is that such is what teams get at this late state of free agency. It also is why it is important not to get too caught up in free agency or even the buyout market. Trades also remain an option when it comes to filling out the roster, with the Heat able to utilize their exception money (and other roster assets) in that regard, as well. Trades ultimately could provide the answers needed.
Q: Do you think Ryan Conwell will be good in the NBA? – Pipsy.
A: The greater question at the moment is whether the second-round pick out of Louisville will get the opportunity. With the Heat in win-now mode with the acquisition of Giannis Antetokounmpo and the start of Bam Adebayo’s maximum extension, it is difficult to envision Ryan Conwell as a rotation player at the start of the season, But the doesn’t mean he can’t play himself into one.
