The Las Vegas Raiders were defeated 23-21 by the Houston Texans in Week 16. One of the bright spots was rookie running back Ashton Jeanty. Jeanty made a couple of massive plays for the Raiders on Sunday that helped salvage an otherwise inconsistent performance.
Jeanty made his first eye-popping play in the third quarter after a quiet opening half. The former Boise State standout caught a 60-yard touchdown pass from Geno Smith. The Raiders were facing a 3rd-and-6 while trailing 13-6. Jeanty aligned as a receiver outside and beat his defender down the field to give the Raiders a 14-13 advantage.
The Texans then rounded off 10 consecutive points to take a 23-14 fourth-quarter lead. With 5:35 remaining, Jeanty burst through the middle for a 51-yard rushing touchdown. Jeanty nearly singlehandedly helped the Raiders upset the Texans on Sunday.
Jeanty accounted for 188 yards and two touchdowns as a dual-threat runner and receiver. His 60-yard TD catch was his lone reception, but it was a game-changing explosive score. Without the 51-yard touchdown run, Jeanty would have been limited to 77 rushing yards on 23 carries (3.34 YPC).
Explosive plays continue salvaging Jeanty's performances in an uneven Raiders offense that isn't helping him with consistency.
