Mike Norvell saw a more comfortable Ashton Daniels operate the Florida State football offense as the Seminoles opened preseason camp on Wednesday, July 29.

Norvell was quick to praise Daniels during his post-practice press conference. He said the highlight of the day came when Daniels connected with Duce Robinson on a deep shot for a touchdown.

It's only day one, and the pads aren't even on yet, but Norvell felt Daniels did well navigating the pocket and running the offense.

"You felt his comfort. There was a couple of plays that you sit there and maybe in the spring... you might try and force something into a situation, or it's the extra half second that it's going to take to the next read. Today, it was really clean from him in that regard," Norvell said after the Seminoles' first practice.

Multiple plays stuck out to Norvell that displayed Daniels' improvement from spring camp. He credited him for making the right reads and taking ownership of his reps.

The downfield touchdown pass to Robinson will be the key takeaway from the first day of camp, but Norvell said Daniels connected on multiple deep balls and was smart when finding his checkdowns

Daniels has struggled with his deep ball accuracy during his career, going 5-of-16 at Auburn last year, with two touchdowns, and a career 33-of-113, 29% completion rate on passes of more than 20 yards. If he's able to develop a more reliable downfield pass, it will open up the Seminoles' offense under Norvell, who tries to manufacture explosive plays.

Norvell said he trusts Daniels to make the right reads, and that trust seeps into how he uses the helmet communication system with him. He said he tries to give Daniels "subtle cues," but he trusts that he'll have his eyes in the right place.

Overall, Norvell felt the redshirt-senior was confident and comfortable in the pocket as the Seminoles march towards an Aug. 29 kickoff against New Mexico State.

"I really liked his presence and how he went through the process today," Norvell said.
