What started off as a sweet homer soon turned sour for the Astoria boys baseball team. On the softball pitch, the Seaside girls finished up an Arizona trip and the Astoria girls outlasted Banks in a dog fight. Here’s some diamond notes.
Naselle’s big inning spoils Astoria’s home opener
The Astoria Fishermen were hoping to send their big crowd home happy on Monday afternoon.
After spending the first two weeks of the season on the road, Astoria finally got to play at their home field, Tapiola Park. Taking on local Washington school Naselle, the Fishermen were hoping to jump start their season. What looked to be a promising start turned sour as a big inning doomed Astoria.
Astoria started fast as pitcher Dallas Norris threw two good innings to start the game. This was followed by the Fishermen getting the leadoff hitter on base via doubles and then bringing them around via sacrifice bunts and base hits. Everything looked good through four innings — but the fifth inning is when everything changed.
Naselle exploded for seven runs and ended up taking the game by a score of 9-4. Despite making five errors to Astoria’s one, Naselle tallied 10 total hits and worked six walks to take home the victory.
Sam Schacher, Archer Hawkins, Jack Johnson, Norris and Sam Mather had the five hits for Astoria during Monday’s game.
Astoria returned to Tapiola Park for a Tuesday game against Yamhill Carlton and got blanked 5-0.
The Fishermen mustered two hits against senior lefty Gus Brunner. Brunner was the two-way standout in this one as he pulled a Shohei Ohtani. The lefty threw a complete shutout, striking out 12 and also leading his team at the plate with a three for three game from the ninth spot.
With the two losses, Astoria is 1-5 on the year. Things may not get easier for Astoria as the team travels over the river to take on Ilwaco High School. Ilwaco is one of the top small school teams in the entire state of Washington and their home park could provide a huge advantage. That game is scheduled to beginat 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
Astoria softball outduels Banks
The softball field at the Columbia Memorial Hospital Sports Complex provided fans with another classic game Tuesday afternoon as Astoria took on future Cowapa League rival Banks.
Returning from their trip to The Dalles, the Astoria girls softball team got right back to business with a straightforward 3-0 win. Taryen Wray led the way for Astoria on the mound as she struck out 10 batters in seven innings of work. She also only allowed two hits and had an RBI double at the plate to help lead her team.
This game was a good old-fashioned pitchers duel for five innings.
Banks freshman pitcher Adelene Stewart did a good job keeping Astoria off balance. Though she didn’t blow away the Fishermen hitters, they weren’t able to square her up, either. Through five innings, a Finley Cameron double was the only hit Astoria had. That hit turned out to be enough as it knocked in Hailee Svensen to give Astoria a lead.
In the sixth inning, the Astoria girls finally started squaring up Stewart as they scored two runs behind doubles from Wray and Lyla Carlson.
The Astoria team will continue its difficult stretch with a game against perennial 4A-contender Pendleton. The Buckaroos are 5-0 with a run differential of 69-16 so far this season. That game will be at 1:30 p.m. on Friday.
Seaside girls fall short in Arizona
Seaside’s softball team finished an Arizona trip with a 1-3 record, falling to Arizona teams Episcopal Academy by a score of 7-1, Seton Catholic by a score of 6-3 and Valley Catholic, 12-3. The Seagulls defeated St. Mary’s of Arizona by a score of 10-7. In their victory over St. Mary’s, four on the Seagulls team had two hits and Tiera Spivey hit a home run. Carly Corde led the team with a 3-4 day, while Grace Walker, Allie Corder, Mack Haag and Spivey each had two runs batted in.
Overall, the Seagulls are 2-4 after the spring break road trip.
They are set to return home to host North Marion on Friday afternoon. That game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
