Pitcher Kaylan Yoder has company. The left-hander from Liberty signed with Arizona last month. Her former teammate JaMaya Byrum followed on Thursday.
Byrum has played shortstop, third base, and all three outfield positions for the Flames in her three years in Lynchburg. The rising senior spent her time at third and in the outfield last year. Her best defensive position according to defensive runs saved was third.
Byrum made 56 starts for Liberty over three seasons. Last season, she had 21 starts in 27 appearances. She made 13 starts in 21 appearances as a freshman and 22 starts in 32 appearances as a sophomore.
Byrum had a total of 118 at-bats and 145 plate appearances in her three years with the Flames. Her best season at the plate came her sophomore year when she hit .179 in 39 at-bats. Last year, she had a .130 average in 54 at-bats.
She came up as an infielder at the prep level where she played for Henderson County High School in Kentucky and Birmingham Thunderbolts Premier Rocky. As a senior, she hit .369 with 13 homers, 48 RBI, and 48 runs scored while helping Henderson County place second in the state tournament.
Byrum provides an infielder who has been at the Division I level for several years for a team that lost much of its infield experience to graduation and transfer after last season. Shortstop Tayler Biehl finished her eligibility while third baseman Jenna Sniffen transferred. The Wildcats have several promising infielders in the freshman class and they return both Kez Lucas and Sereniti Trice, but they will be very young everywhere but second base. Byrum also has the versatility that the Arizona coaching staff values.
She is ranked the No. 577 player in the transfer class by 64 Analytics.
