Summer is here in Arizona, and there’s plenty of activity, including college sports and a new season for the Phoenix Mercury, Phoenix Rising FC and Arizona Rattlers. Here are updates on news and events happening around Arizona sports:
The United States named Phoenix Mercury guards Kahleah Copper and Kelsey Plum to its 12-player roster on Aug. 6 for the upcoming FIBA World Cup in Germany.
The women's national team is also headlined by A'ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart, Napheesa Collier, Chelsea Gray, Jackie Young, Rhyne Howard, Caitlin Clark, Paige Bueckers, Angel Reese and Aliyah Boston.
Wilson, Stewart, Plum, Gray and Copper suited up for the USA at the 2022 World Cup, with Plum, Stewart and Wilson also on the 2018 squad.
The U.S. has won 12 consecutive gold medals at the World Cup, and will face China (Sept. 4), Italy (Sept. 6) and Czechia (Sept. 7) in group play before moving on to the knockout rounds. The tournament will run Sept. 4-13, and the WNBA season will pause Aug. 31-Sept. 16.

Kelsey Plum scored 19 points in her first start with the Phoenix Mercury, but the Atlanta Dream beat the Mercury, 96-82, on Wednesday, Aug. 5.
The Mercury struggled to defend the perimeter against Rhyne Howard, who made five of Atlanta's 14 3-pointers. Phoenix was just 7-of-24 (29%). Howard finished with 23 points and eight assists, followed by Allisha Gray's 20 points.
Alyssa Thomas scored 17 points, and DeWanna Bonner had 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The Mercury (12-20) never led in the game and were pushed back to 11th place and 6.5 games out of a playoff spot. Phoenix has another opportunity to gain ground with the Connecticut Sun on Friday, Aug. 7.
